Haitian literature is a treasure trove within the Caribbean literary tapestry, distinguished by its rich history and unique cultural nuances. Yet, it remains a hidden gem for many readers in the United States. The historical circumstances of its emergence and the prevailing bilingual current of French and Haitian Creole characterizing contemporary Haitian literary publications, coupled with the ongoing dialogue and shifts in Haitian migration across the globe, raise the question, “Where does Haitian literature currently stand in the United States?” Our distinguished panel will delve into this very question, featuring discourse from: Charlot Lucien, a storyteller and erudite lecturer on Haitian culture and history. He will paint a swift yet comprehensive picture of Haitian literature through the lens of migration. Danielle Legros Georges, the 2014 Boston Poet Laureate, Professor of Creative Writing at Lesley University, and the translator behind Ida Faubert’s acclaimed poetry collection, Island Heart. Georges will discuss the pivotal role that translation plays in the world of poetry. Eddy Toussaint, esteemed writer, editor, and founder of Trilingual Press, will explore the significance of translation as a conduit for cultural solidarity and the building of human connection; especially within the context of Trilingual Press’ upcoming Trilingual anthology of contemporary Haitian and Haitian-American poems. This session will be moderated by Milady Auguste, author of Sur Les Traces de Man Bonne and Vice President of Refrain Littéraire.
